God’s Promises
Don’t we love when God speaks and give us promises? God takes his time to see our worries, and he soothes us with His word and care.
At church, we are talking about family values. And what a coincidence that mid-week, I was thinking about how proud I am about my parents, but it wasn’t always like that. I had an overprotective mother and a workaholic father that didn’t take the time to take me places for me to socialize, and my friends couldn’t pick me up because my mother didn’t trust them. So I grew up pressured to be perfect, to be a good daughter, to be a good Christian and this tightness squeezed me to be the opposite.
I didn’t derail that far, just enough to make my parents mad and for me to feel guilty.
This is where the fun part begins. Ephesians 6:2 talks about honoring our parents to have a long and enjoyable life. If you continue reading, it says: “IT IS the first commandment with promise.” Don’t these words punch you right in the nose? It hit me hard like Muhammad Ali’s cutting left jab.
Why? Because it says clearly that it’s a promise that comes with a command; Honor your Father and Mother.
Merriam-Webster defines Honor as a showing of usually merited respect, but sometimes we don’t see that they deserve the part.
We often see people around us, especially parents do things that we don’t understand right away and it’s hard to grasp that our parents are harming us.
Rest assure that at times there is a reason to answer your ‘whys’ and sometimes there is none. In spite of this God is committed to his promises; we need to do our part and trust in the Lord because even if we don’t understand, He will turn our experiences into lessons allow us to grow in spirit.
