Media Fast Challenge
The noises of the 21st century are lurking their way as I attempt to rekindle the long distance relationship I seem to be having with God lately.
I blame it on the phone’s push notifications, Netflix, Amazon Video, Redbox, social media, and the ongoing obsession to verify my email 20 times, sound familiar?
As you can read, I am clearly having a hard time meeting one on one with our Maker. But my heart longs for depth and quality time that I simply cannot get by spending only 15 minutes a day on the Bible app.
So this week after much talk and planning, I finally took the plunge to do a 30 day fast, a full on physical and spiritual detox with the sole purpose of developing a stronger communion with the Lord.
Which means that in the next four weeks, I will be fasting different types of media, including a regular food fast.
You may be asking, what exactly is a media fast?
It’s basically the same as fasting food; it’s withholding the use of specific devices to put away distractions and provide more time for prayer and scripture reading.
So what do you say, wanna join me?
I can’t promise it will be easy, but I can guarantee that it will provide more time for God, as well as an eye-opening experience of how much we have grown dependent on our devices.
Check out the Rundown of the month below, maybe, that will help you see the big picture.
Rundown:
Media Fast Week 1: TV, Streaming Platforms, Youtube
Limit your use of Netflix, Amazon Video, Youtube or any other streaming platform available. As well as the use of your TV and video games, WAIT, WHAT NO VIDEO GAMES?! Yeap, no video games, movies, or silly cat videos on youtube. Instead spend time praying, reading scripture or perhaps a book during the time you would have spent watching movies.
Media Fast Week 2: Social Media
Resist the temptation to check your Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) during this week; It helps if you remove all the apps from your phone or tablet. Remember to continue Week 1 fast during this week.
Media Fast Week 3: Push Notifications & Email Subscriptions
Keep fasting social media, movies, and video games take time this week to turn off all the push notifications from your phone, this will help you push aside all the distractions that are constantly being bombarded to our devices. Also, unsubscribe from any newsletters you are currently receiving in your email that you no longer read.
Media Fast Week 4: Vegan Fast
Finish up the month with a vegan food fast, no meat, chicken or dairy products.
Until next Monday, I will be praying that God gives us strength and self-control as we try to be more intentional in our relationship with Him.
